The last Writers Write : Actors Read sold out so get your tickets early for the next one on Wednesday October 7th at 7pm and be in the room for another special event as Donogh Rees reads The Long Way Home by Majella Cullinane, and Peter Tait reads a classic, Man’s Inhumanity to Man, by John A Lee.
Marjella Cullinane’s story is from her recently published collection, Islands Ever After. Originally from Ireland she has published three poetry collections, Guarding the Flame, Whisper of a Crow’s Wing and Meantime, as well as the novel The Life of De’Ath which was shortlisted for the Dundee International Book Prize. Donogh Rees is known for many highly regarded roles in theatre and screen, her last stage appearance was in Things That Matter for ATC.
John A. Lee was born in Dunedin in 1881 and lead a colourful life. He came back from WW1 missing an arm, and in 1935 was appointed Under-Secretary in the Michael Joseph Savage government, where he clashed with the PM and was later expelled. He died in 1982 having written around twenty books. Peter Tait grew up in Dunedin devouring John A Lee’s “Shiner Stories”. Since emerging as a creature in the short film Kitchen Sink, he has gone on to play many different characters onscreen including in Return of the King, Rings of Power, Pike River, Small Town Scandal and Brokenwood, and in his own work including Bradman and Back River Road.
Writers Write : Actors Read is a monthly series, curated by Bridget van der Zijpp for the podcast of the same name, and is supported by Creative New Zealand and The Women’s Bookshop who will join us on the night and have the books available.
