Duty Manager (Casual Event-Based Role)

The Button Factory is seeking an experienced and reliable Duty Manager to oversee our licensed events and ensure the smooth, safe, and compliant operation of our bar and hospitality service.

This is not a full-time or part-time position. It is a casual, event-based role, generally involving one or two licensed events each month, making it ideal for someone looking to supplement existing work in hospitality or events.

About the Role

As Duty Manager, you will be responsible for managing all licensed bar operations during events while helping create a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable experience for our community. You will work closely with our event team, volunteers, performers, and contractors to ensure each event runs smoothly and in accordance with the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the certified Duty Manager for licensed events.
  • Ensure compliance with all liquor licensing legislation and host responsibility requirements.
  • Open and close bar operations for events.
  • Supervise bar staff and volunteers throughout the event.
  • Monitor responsible service of alcohol and manage intoxication where required.
  • Ensure all alcohol service is conducted safely and professionally.
  • Handle any licensing or compliance matters that arise during events.
  • Manage cash handling and end-of-night reconciliation where required.
  • Complete opening and closing checklists.
  • Maintain cleanliness and presentation of the bar throughout service.
  • Monitor stock levels before, during, and after events.
  • Assist with beverage ordering and inventory management.
  • Conduct regular stock takes and report stock usage.
  • Ensure refrigeration, glassware, equipment, and bar supplies are maintained.
  • Liaise with event organisers regarding bar requirements and service timing.
  • Help maintain a positive atmosphere while resolving issues calmly and professionally.
  • Ensure health and safety procedures are followed by staff and patrons.

Essential Requirements

  • Current New Zealand Manager’s Certificate (must remain valid).
  • Demonstrated experience as a Duty Manager in licensed premises.
  • Strong understanding of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act and host responsibility obligations.
  • Experience supervising hospitality teams.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Reliable, organised, and able to work independently.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure during busy events.
  • Eligible to work in New Zealand.

Desirable

  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Experience working at live music venues, festivals, or arts and community events.
  • Experience with stock management systems and inventory control.
  • Knowledge of POS systems and cash reconciliation.
